On the night that both Manchester sides tie at 1-1 in the Champions league,United manager gets bothered by goalkeeper’s question.

On Wednesday, September 14, Aleksandar Kolarov curls his free kick over thewall in Napoli which provided Manchester City a point in their ChampionsLeague debut.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s problem about which goalkeeper was his No. 1 wasunmasked last Wednesday when he told a Television reporter something abouther trying to find little things that were stupid by inquiring if David deGea could be dropped from the match on Sunday against Chelsea.

The Danish goalkeeper, Anders Lindegaard, who believes that he has a call onbeing the first selection, scored two fine late saves to maintain a 1-1 drawfor Manchester United’s Champions League at Benfica. The problem causedFerguson to lose his temper with the ITV presenter Kelly Cates, who is thedaughter of Liverpool’s manager Kenny Dalglish. Ferguson reportedly statedsomething to the effect that it was his understanding that we had beforethat game that on Sunday David de Gea will be playing. Ferguson also statedto Cates that he didn’t understand why he asked these questions.

Lindegaard stated that he wants to be No.1 on a night when both ManchesterCity and United were rescued to a 1-1 draw after falling behind. The rescuecame to Manchester City by a 74th minute goal by Aleksandar Kolarov goal ina brilliants Champions League debut at home in Napoli. When he was askedabout challenging for the first spot on the team spot, he respondedsomething to the effect that he wasn’t here to pick his nose.

Ferguson later restated his faith in De Gea stating that he was quiteimpressed with Anders, but that, actually, they have two great goalkeepersin David and Anders. He also stated that they were consistently getting tothe point when they were going to share that. On Tuesday, Anders willpossibly play against Leeds United and on Sunday, David will play againstChelsea. There are many chances to spread that load, since coming over tothe English game, it’s such an intensely competitive league for a younggoalkeeper. There will be a time when he will have to give him a break.

At Bolton, last Saturday, Lindegaard wasn’t chosen for United’s win in spiteof the fact that Ferguson was apparently giving some serious considerationto protecting De Gea from the aerial threat that punished him on the openingweekend of the season at West Bromwich Albion. Lindegaard reportedly statedabout facing Benfica that it was great fun and very amusing and that’s themost important reason that you play football, for the fun of it. He alsoreportedly stated something to the effect of the fact that if there aren’tsome nerves involved then it’s not that much fun because it’s what makes himfeel alive and that he was satisfied with his performance but that it wassomewhat sad that he failed to save the first goal.
